Italian Landrace
The Italian Landrace is Italy's national strain of the Landrace pig, a white, lop-eared domestic pig selected from Scandinavian Landrace foundations and adapted to Italian production goals. Like other Landrace lines it has a long body, good maternal ability, and a frame suited to producing uniform crossbred market pigs. Italian selection has also emphasized the heavy-pig trade, where animals must reach higher slaughter weights for cured products such as prosciutto while maintaining sound legs and carcass quality.
Most Italian Landrace pigs are managed in recorded breeding herds or commercial systems rather than as backyard rare breeds. Sows are valued in maternal lines, often crossed with Large White and Duroc genetics, so selection data on litter size, growth, feet, and backfat are more useful than appearance alone. White pigs need protection from sunburn outdoors, and their large mature size calls for strong pens, good flooring, steady water, and carefully balanced rations. Breeding stock should fit the intended market, especially if pigs are being raised for traditional Italian heavy carcasses.
