Krškopolje
The Krškopolje pig is Slovenia's native black-and-white belted pig, traditionally linked with the Krško field and nearby rural areas. It is a medium-sized domestic pig with a dark body, a pale band across the shoulders or forebody, and a reputation for resilience in low-input and semi-outdoor systems. The breed belongs to the wider group of European local pigs kept for pork and fat, but its Slovenian origin, belted pattern, and conservation status make it more specific than a generic spotted farm pig.
Krškopolje herds are usually managed with heritage production, local food programs, or genetic conservation in mind. They can fit pasture and mixed farm settings when they have strong fencing, shelter from wet weather, and balanced feed rather than forage alone. Breeders should pay attention to litter performance, sound legs, and authentic breed type, since small populations can lose useful variation if selection is based only on markings or novelty.
