Lacombe
The Lacombe is a Canadian white pig breed developed at the federal research station in Lacombe, Alberta. It was bred as a practical production animal, drawing on improved white breeds and selected for traits useful in Canadian pork systems, including growth, mothering ability, and carcass value. Lacombes are usually white, medium to large, and more important as a managed breeding population than as a novelty breed.
For farms, the Lacombe is mainly a production and genetic-resource breed rather than a backyard pet label. It needs the normal infrastructure expected for full-sized pigs: secure pens, ventilation, farrowing management, sound flooring, and feed matched to age and breeding status. Producers interested in Lacombe influence should confirm herd source and current availability, since many historic research or national breeds persist through limited herds, semen, or conservation programs rather than broad commercial sale.
