Lithuanian Native
The Lithuanian Native is an old local pig from Lithuania, generally smaller and less uniform than modern white commercial breeds. It is often noted for wattles under the neck in some animals, varied coat colors, and adaptation to traditional farm conditions. The breed belongs to the Baltic region's heritage livestock resources, where preserving local genetics can matter for resilience, cultural history, and traits that may not show up in high-output commercial lines.
Keeping Lithuanian Native pigs is usually a conservation or specialty-farm decision rather than a search for maximum daily gain. They need normal pig care, including dry bedding, parasite control, balanced feed, and fencing that works for active animals. Breeders should avoid selecting only for visible curiosities such as wattles, since fertility, sound feet, mothering, and genetic diversity are more important for a rare population's long-term usefulness.
