Minzhu (民猪)
The Minzhu, written 民猪 in Chinese, is a native pig from northeastern China, where cold winters shaped selection for hardiness and useful fat cover. It is generally a black pig with strong maternal ability, good adaptation to local feed conditions, and slower, fatter growth than lean commercial breeds. The name is sometimes translated as people's pig, reflecting its connection with ordinary farm production rather than a single show-ring appearance.
Minzhu pigs are valuable to regional breeding, research, and conservation because cold tolerance and reproductive traits can be useful in crossbreeding or genetic studies. Herd managers should provide dry winter shelter, careful rationing, and farrowing support while preserving the traits that make the breed distinct. Anyone importing, studying, or buying Minzhu genetics should keep source records precise, since local Chinese breeds can be difficult to identify accurately once crossed.
