Mong Cai
The Mong Cai is a Vietnamese native pig from the northeast, especially associated with Quang Ninh and nearby areas. It is often black and white, with a dark head or back and pale belly or patches, and it is valued for fertility, early maturity, and adaptation to smallholder conditions. Mong Cai pigs are not large lean commercial animals; they are used for reproductive performance, thriftiness, and crossbreeding systems where local sows raise litters under modest farm conditions.
Farmers managing Mong Cai pigs usually focus on sow productivity and compatibility with local feed resources. Housing should stay dry and shaded, and rations need enough protein and minerals to support frequent breeding without weakening the sow. In conservation or development programs, the line should be documented carefully because crossbreeding can improve market pigs while reducing the pure native population if replacements are not protected.
