Mora Romagnola
The Mora Romagnola is an Italian pig breed from Romagna, in the Emilia-Romagna region. Its name refers to the dark mora coloring, often a deep brown to black shade, and the breed is associated with traditional outdoor or semi-extensive pork production. Once reduced to very low numbers, it has been maintained and promoted as a local genetic resource tied to regional foods, slower growth, and a more rustic body type than modern white commercial pigs.
Mora Romagnola pigs are best suited to keepers prepared for heritage-breed management, including strong fencing, seasonal shade, dry shelter, and finishing schedules that may be longer than industrial pork systems. Breeders should protect authentic lines and avoid selecting only for dark color, since fertility, legs, temperament, and meat quality all matter. Local product programs may have their own rules, so source and husbandry records are worth keeping carefully.
