Moura

The Moura is a Brazilian pig breed or landrace type most strongly associated with southern Brazil. It is commonly described as a rustic pig with dark or mixed coloring, developed from Iberian and other introduced stock under local farm conditions. Moura pigs have been valued for hardiness, mothering, and pork or lard production in systems that did not rely on the same inputs as modern commercial herds.

For farmers, Moura pigs make the most sense where local adaptation and genetic conservation are part of the goal. They still require ordinary pig infrastructure: strong fencing, shade, dry resting areas, parasite control, and feed that supports breeding and finishing. Buyers should ask whether the herd is part of a recognized conservation effort or a local mixed population using the name. Clear records help separate a genuine regional breed from any dark, rustic-looking pig.
