North Caucasian
The North Caucasian is a Russian pig breed developed for the North Caucasus region, where farms needed animals that could perform under local climate and feeding conditions. It was created from regional pigs with influence from improved breeds, producing a meat and lard type often described with dark, spotted, or black-and-white coloring. The breed represents a practical Soviet-era regional breeding effort rather than a single ornamental feature.
North Caucasian pigs are most useful to regional production, conservation herds, and farms that value adaptation along with pork output. They need the same basics as other full-sized pigs: secure fencing, shade in heat, dry winter shelter, water, and rations matched to breeding or finishing. Breeders should verify source and selection history, because color markings overlap with many crosses. Keeping performance and ancestry records helps preserve the breed's practical identity.
