Philippine Native
The Philippine native pig refers to indigenous and locally adapted pigs found across the Philippines rather than one single standardized breed. These pigs are usually smaller and slower growing than imported commercial stock, often dark-coated, agile, and well suited to village systems, coconut-growing areas, forest edges, and household production. Local names and types vary by island and community.
Native Philippine pigs can be valuable for smallholders because they tolerate local feed resources and modest facilities better than many high-performance breeds. They still need secure pens, parasite control, clean water, and protection from heat and heavy rain. Breeding programs should identify the regional type being preserved, since crossing with commercial boars may improve growth but can dilute adaptation. For cultural or conservation work, source location and family history are as important as appearance.
