Red Wattle
The Red Wattle pig is an American heritage breed recognized for a red coat and the fleshy wattles that hang from the lower jaw. It is a large meat pig with roots in southern and rural United States herds, though its exact origins are not perfectly documented. The breed is valued for outdoor ability, maternal traits, and a look that separates it from ordinary red commercial crosses.
Red Wattle pigs suit farms that can provide pasture or dry lots with shade, wallows, and sturdy fences. They grow to substantial size, so handling facilities should be designed for adult animals, not just feeder pigs. Breeding plans should preserve wattles while selecting for sound legs, calm temperament, litter size, and practical carcass quality. Because the breed has conservation importance, breeders should avoid overusing a few popular boars and should document lines when selling breeding stock.
