Swedish Landrace
The Swedish Landrace is a white, long-bodied pig breed developed in Sweden for efficient pork production and maternal performance. It belongs to the Scandinavian landrace family, with selection for fertility, growth, carcass leanness, and suitability for structured breeding programs. Although the name contains landrace, modern Swedish Landrace pigs are a managed breed with performance data rather than an undefined village population.
Commercial herds often use Swedish Landrace genetics in maternal lines, where litter size, piglet survival, udder quality, and sow durability are critical. They need careful nutrition, clean farrowing systems, ventilation, and health programs to express their potential. Small farms can use the breed or its crosses, but should understand whether they are buying pure stock or commercial hybrids. Selection should not ignore feet, legs, temperament, or longevity in pursuit of production numbers alone.
