Turopolje
The Turopolje pig is a Croatian heritage breed from the Turopolje region near Zagreb, historically kept in oak forests, wetlands, and village systems. It is usually gray or whitish with black spots and has a curly or wavy coat in many animals. The breed is strongly tied to traditional extensive pig keeping and is valued for cultural conservation as well as specialty pork.
Turopolje pigs do best where they can express their foraging nature in woodland, pasture, or well-managed outdoor pens. They still need shelter, fencing, parasite control, and supplemental feed when natural resources are limited. Breeding programs should preserve the regional type, color pattern, hardiness, and mothering ability while avoiding excessive inbreeding. Because the breed is rare, cooperation among keepers and careful source records are important for long-term survival.
