Wessex Saddleback
The Wessex Saddleback is a historic British black pig with a white saddle or belt over the shoulders and front legs. It was associated with southern England and became one of the parents of the British Saddleback when breed histories were combined. The name is still important for heritage-pig records, even though living stock may be managed under the broader Saddleback identity.
For keepers and historians, Wessex Saddleback should be handled as a heritage line or historical breed name with care. Black pigs with white belts are not automatically Wessex, since Hampshire and other saddle-patterned pigs can look similar. Outdoor management suits the type: shade, wallows, strong fences, and dry sleeping areas. Conservation discussions should rely on documented herd history and breed society guidance rather than trying to recreate the name from appearance alone.
