Barbet of Liège
The Barbet of Liège, or Liège Barbet, is a Belgian fancy pigeon developed from the domestic rock pigeon, Columba livia. It belongs to the broad barb or wattle-pigeon tradition, with attention paid to the head, beak, eye cere, and compact station rather than to racing performance. Birds may appear in the usual domestic pigeon colors and patterns, including blue, black, ash red, brown, checker, grizzle, and dilute forms, depending on the line and standard used.
Fanciers keep the Barbet of Liège mainly as an exhibition and preservation breed. A dry, well-ventilated loft, clean nest bowls, and steady mineral grit are more important than elaborate management. Because head and facial features are part of the type, breeding pairs are selected for sound eyes, workable beaks, and vigor, not only for heavier cere or show character. It is a niche Belgian breed, so buyers may need to contact specialty clubs or long-established pigeon breeders.
