Bavarian Highflyer
The Bavarian highflyer is a German high-flying pigeon associated with Bavaria. It is a domestic pigeon, Columba livia, selected for loft attachment, climbing ability, endurance, and a recognizable regional type. Highflyers are distinct from racing homers: the traditional aim is sustained flight above the home loft, often as a kit, not timed distance racing from a release point.
People who keep Bavarian highflyers usually manage them as working flying pigeons as well as breeding stock. Young birds are settled gradually, trained in calm weather, and watched for predators, overflying, or poor orientation. Feed is adjusted to work level, with enough grain, grit, and clean water to support repeated flights without making birds heavy. Show strains may be kept more like other fancy pigeons, but performance families should still be bred from birds that return reliably, fly in the desired style, and raise strong youngsters.
