Bergamasco
Bergamasco refers to an Italian breed of domestic pigeon associated with Bergamo and the Lombardy region. It is separate from the Bergamasco sheepdog despite the shared regional name. In pigeon circles the Bergamasco is usually discussed as a solid form or utility pigeon shaped by northern Italian lofts, then maintained for exhibition. Birds are expected to look strong and balanced, with a practical body, clean carriage, and color and markings judged against the standard used by the local club.
The breed suits fanciers interested in heritage Italian pigeons, small farm lofts, and show projects where type matters more than aerial performance. Good management emphasizes dry housing, secure nesting, and selection for fertility and steady parenting as much as outward shape. Because Bergamascos are not common in many countries, imported stock or close relatives may differ in size and style; buyers should ask which standard the birds were bred to and avoid building a family from too few pairs.
