Bohemian Bagdad
The Bohemian Bagdad is a Czech fancy pigeon from the old Bagdad or carrier-type group of domestic pigeons, not a bird of modern Iraqi origin despite the name. Developed in Bohemia, it reflects a European tradition of selecting pigeons for a long, firm head, strong beak, clean outline, and expressive eye cere. It is related in purpose to other wattle and carrier-style exhibition breeds rather than to racing homers, although it shares the same rock-pigeon ancestry, Columba livia. Standards may accept a range of colors and patterns, with structure and head quality usually carrying more weight than unusual plumage.
Bohemian Bagdads are kept mainly in exhibition lofts where birds can stay clean, fit, and calm enough for handling. The beak, cere, and eyes should be checked regularly, since overly coarse tissue or poor condition distracts from the type and can affect comfort. Breeding stock is chosen for balance, vigor, fertility, and the ability to rear squabs without excessive intervention. Anyone buying them should compare birds with the relevant Czech or national standard, because Bagdad-type names can be confusing across countries.
