Bucharest Ciung Highflier
The Bucharest Ciung highflier is a Romanian domestic pigeon from the Bucharest flying-pigeon tradition. Ciung is a local fancier term often associated with a short, blunt beak and compact head type, while highflier points to the original purpose: birds selected to rise and stay aloft in trained teams. It is related to the broader southeastern European family of highfliers and tumblers, but Romanian breeders recognize it by its own local type, lively temperament, strong wings, and range of standard pigeon colors and patterns.
Working lines are managed as flying pigeons, not as cage ornaments. Youngsters are settled carefully to the loft, flown in suitable weather, and fed enough energy for height without becoming heavy. In areas with heavy raptor pressure, some keepers limit free flight or use safer training schedules. Show-selected Ciung birds may differ in performance, so buyers should ask whether a family is actually flown, how the beak type affects rearing, and what standard the breeder uses for head, body and color.
