Bulgarian Shield Owl Pigeon
Bulgarian Shield Owl Pigeon is a Bulgarian fancy pigeon in the owl or frill family, developed from domestic rock pigeon stock, Columba livia. Owl pigeons are usually compact birds with a rounded head, short beak, full chest, and a small breast frill or jabot. The shield part of the name describes colored wing shields contrasted with a lighter body, giving breeders a clear pattern to preserve alongside the typical owl shape and expression.
In the loft it is managed mainly as an exhibition and ornamental breed. Short-beaked owl pigeons can be less efficient at feeding young than longer-beaked utility pigeons, so breeders watch nests closely and may use foster parents when a pair struggles. Good ventilation, dry floors, regular bathing, and uncrowded pens help keep the frill and shield feathers clean. Selection should not chase an extreme head at the expense of vigor; a useful Bulgarian Shield Owl has clear markings, sound breathing, active movement, and enough parenting ability to keep the line practical.
