Bulgarian White Shield Roller
The Bulgarian white shield roller is a domestic pigeon breed of Balkan origin, kept among roller and tumbler fanciers rather than as a meat bird. Its name describes both its home country and its usual marking: colored body plumage with clean white wing shields, although breeders may work with several base colors and patterns. It is a compact, athletic pigeon descended from the rock pigeon, valued for a neat outline, active flight, and the inherited tendency to roll or tumble in the air when selected for performance.
Good loft management matters because display quality and flying ability can pull in different directions. Birds kept for kit flying need steady exercise, light but nutritious feed, and protection from hawks during training; exhibition birds are chosen more closely for shield markings, symmetry, feather condition, and type. Pair selection usually considers both family performance and reliable parenting, since excessive rolling can be unsafe if exaggerated. As with other pigeons, they require a dry, well-ventilated loft, clean water, grit, and quarantine for new stock.
