Cambalhota Português
The Cambalhota Português, often translated as the Portuguese tumbler, is a domestic pigeon variety from Portugal bred around the old sport of tumbling flight. Cambalhota means somersault, so the name tells a visitor more about its purpose than about one fixed color. These pigeons belong to the broad Columba livia fancy pigeon group and may be seen in several colors and markings. Fanciers look for a lively, compact bird with good wings, clean movement, and an inherited tendency to turn over in the air without losing control.
Management centers on flying condition and family selection. Young birds are trained on a routine from a safe loft, with short sessions at first and close attention to weather, molt, and hawk pressure. Breeding pairs are chosen from birds that tumble reliably yet return well and rear their young without trouble. Outside Portugal the name may be uncommon or translated in different ways, so buyers should ask for the breeder's standard, photographs of mature relatives, and, when possible, evidence of performance rather than relying on color alone.
