Damascene

Damascene

The Damascene is an old eastern Mediterranean fancy pigeon associated with Syria and the region around Damascus. It is prized for pale silver or ice-blue body color, dark wing bars, dark eyes, clean eye ceres, and a smooth, refined outline. The head should look neat and balanced, and the color contrast is subtle compared with boldly pied breeds. Modern Damascenes are kept by fanciers in many countries.

Damascenes reward careful color and condition management. They need clean lofts, bathing water, balanced feed, and enough space to prevent feather damage. Breeders select for the correct pale body color, clear bars, eye expression, head shape, and fertility. Because the breed's appeal depends on quiet contrast rather than a loud pattern, buyers should compare birds in natural light and ask which standard the breeder follows.

Colors: Almond, Ash Red, Bar, Barless, Black, Blue, Brown, Checker, Dilute, Dun, Grizzle, Indigo, Mottle, Opal, Pied, Recessive Red, Red, Silver, Splash, Spread, White, Yellow
