Egyptian Swift Pigeon
The Egyptian swift pigeon is a slender, active fancy and flying pigeon from Egyptian stock, named for its swift-like outline rather than any relation to the wild swift. Descended from the rock dove, Columba livia, it has been selected for a long, tight-feathered body, alert head, and lively station, with wings and tail giving a streamlined look. In its home region and among international fanciers, Egyptian swift varieties may be recognized by local colour names and subtle differences in head, beak, and body proportions, which can make identification more strain-specific than the English name suggests.
Fanciers keep Egyptian swifts for style, vigor, and sometimes free flight, so it is worth asking whether a family has been maintained as a show strain or an active loft-flying strain. Birds intended for exercise outside the loft need gradual training and sensible protection from hawks and neighborhood hazards. In confined aviaries, they still benefit from length and height for movement. Breeding programs usually emphasize fertility, clean feather condition, and the precise variety traits used by the breeder's association.
