French Pouter
The French pouter is a cropper-type domestic pigeon associated with French fancy breeding. Pouters are recognized by the inflated crop used in display, an upright stance, and a body outline shaped around that globe. The French name may cover a standard variety or local family depending on the source, so it is best understood as part of the broader European pouter and cropper group rather than as a working homer.
Housing should give these birds space to inflate, turn, and court without scraping the crop on wire or rough fixtures. Breeders look for a crop that fills freely but does not interfere with eating, breathing, mating, or feeding young. Stable nest bowls, calm handling, and lean conditioning help keep pairs productive. Before buying, compare side view, leg length, crop placement, and vitality rather than choosing only the bird with the largest globe.
