Garden Fantail
The Garden Fantail is a fantail-type domestic pigeon kept for the raised, spread tail that gives the group its name. Compared with the most extreme exhibition fantails, a garden strain may be plainer, hardier, and closer to a small ornamental loft bird for home grounds. The key features are tail spread, carriage, balance, and a calm presence rather than racing ability or aerial tumbling.
Fantails need housing that protects the tail from breakage and dirt. Wide perches, clean floors, and uncluttered nest boxes help birds turn without damaging feathers. Breeders pair for a broad, even fan while keeping normal movement, fertility, and good parenting. In outdoor garden aviaries, protection from cats, hawks, and wet ground matters more than elaborate show preparation. Buyers should check that the tail carriage does not prevent the bird from mating or perching comfortably.
