Gelderland Slenke
The Gelderland Slenke, or Gelderse Slenk, is an old Dutch flying pigeon from Gelderland and part of the Slenke or ringbeater tradition. It is associated with a forceful flight style that may include wing clapping, an upright head carriage, and a hollow, fan-like tail position. The breed is closely related in history to the Groninger Slenke but is recognized as its own regional variety.
Slenke management differs from keeping a purely decorative pigeon. Birds need a secure home loft, regular exercise, and patient settling so their flight can be seen without losing them. Breeders select for the characteristic action, stamina, vigor, and body type, not only color. Dutch preservation programs treat these pigeons as heritage breeds, so careful pairing, banding, and exchange among responsible keepers help maintain a small but meaningful population. Buyers should ask whether a line is still flown or kept mainly for show.
