German Modena
The German Modena is the German show form of the Modena hen-pigeon tradition, bred for a compact, rounded body, raised chest, short back, and confident station. It descends from domestic pigeons of Italian Modena background but has been shaped heavily by German exhibition selection. The breed is known in marked and self-colored forms, with type and balance carrying as much importance as color.
German Modenas need enough room to stay active, because a cobby bird can become soft if overfed or crowded. Perches and nest boxes should suit their compact build, and pairs should be watched for fertility and steady feeding of squabs. Breeders judge outline, stance, neck, head, feather tightness, and color after the molt. The best lofts keep the breed lively and productive rather than turning it into a heavy decorative pigeon.
