Ghent Owl Pigeon
The Ghent Owl pigeon is a Belgian owl-type fancy pigeon linked with Ghent and the old Smerle and owl traditions of the Low Countries. It is selected for a compact body, short beak, rounded head, and breast frill rather than for flight performance or utility size. The breed's Belgian identity matters, because several owl and Smerle pigeons share a family resemblance but follow different standards.
Keeping Ghent Owls calls for the same care used with other short-faced fancy pigeons. Feeders should be easy to reach, nestlings should be checked during the first days, and damp litter should be avoided around the frill and face. Breeders compare head shape, beak fit, frill, body balance, feather texture, and calm behavior. When buying, ask whether pairs raise their own young reliably; that practical trait is worth preserving in small owl breeds.
