Groninger Slenke
The Groninger Slenke, or Groninger Slenk, is an old Dutch flying pigeon from Groningen. It belongs to the Slenke or ringbeater tradition and is related to the Gelderland Slenke, though the two are treated as separate regional breeds. The bird is associated with a special flight style that includes wing clapping, an elevated head, and a hollow spread tail, a combination that has kept the breed meaningful to Dutch fanciers for centuries.
Keeping Groninger Slenken is heritage flying-pigeon work rather than ordinary show loft management. Birds need patient settling, controlled exercise, and enough room to show their action without becoming lost or overhandled. Breeders select for the traditional flight, vigor, body type, and fertility together. Because Slenken are not mass-market pigeons, responsible keepers maintain bands, pair notes, and exchanges with other Dutch or specialist fanciers to avoid narrowing the breed.
