Helmet
The Helmet is an old fancy pigeon breed named for the colored cap or helmet marking on the head. Traditional Helmet pigeons are often linked with German tumbler ancestry, and many also have colored tails or other fixed markings depending on the standard. They are domestic pigeons bred for pattern, head, carriage, and show condition rather than for utility size or long-distance homing.
Helmet pigeons need patient marking selection. The cap should be even and clean, the body color should follow the standard, and the bird still has to be vigorous, fertile, and balanced. Dry lofts and regular bathing help preserve pale feathers before shows. Some short-beaked or heavily selected families may need closer nest checks, but practical breeders favor birds that rear young reliably. Buyers should confirm which national Helmet standard is being used.
