Lucerne Self
The Lucerne Self is the solid-colored member of the Swiss Lucerne color-pigeon group. In pigeon terminology, self means the bird is intended to be one clear, even color rather than collar-marked, pied, or barred in a contrasting pattern. It shares the same domestic Columba livia background as other fancy pigeons, but the breeder's eye is on uniform plumage, Lucerne type, and clean feather condition.
For owners, the Lucerne Self is mainly an exhibition and preservation breed. Even color is easier to lose than it appears, so pair selection weighs shade, feather texture, body type, and vigor together. These pigeons do well in calm lofts where sunlight, bathing, and good nutrition support a smooth molt. Buyers should learn which colors are recognized by the relevant club, because acceptable shades and judging priorities can vary between standards.
