Lucerne White-Tail
In the Lucerne white-tail, the key feature is a clear white tail set against a colored body. This Swiss fancy pigeon is part of the Lucerne group, a set of color varieties bred from the domestic rock pigeon for crisp markings and refined type. It is often discussed alongside Lucerne shield and Lucerne tiger-head pigeons, but the tail marking is the practical identifier. The body should be alert, balanced, and moderate, with the emphasis on clean feather condition and sharply separated color areas. Depending on the standard, birds may be seen in blue, black, brown, ash red, checker, bar, dilute, grizzle, indigo, and related pigeon colors.
White-tail markings are unforgiving in the show pen because stray colored feathers in the tail or pale feathers in the wrong part of the body are easy to see. Breeding programs usually hold back birds that combine a bright, even tail with sound fertility and normal parenting. Like most fancy pigeons, Lucerne white-tails need a dry loft, safe outdoor flight or aviary time, and steady access to minerals and grit. Buyers should look at both parents and young birds, since color boundaries can shift slightly through juvenile molts.
