Lugoj Roller
Named for the town of Lugoj in Romania's Banat region, the Lugoj roller is a performance pigeon in the broad roller and tumbler tradition. It is a domestic pigeon, Columba livia, selected for flight behavior as much as appearance. A good Lugoj roller is valued for kit discipline, height, orientation, and controlled backward rolling in the air. The breed may be compared with better-known rollers, but local families often have their own expectations for depth, frequency, and style of roll. Colors are secondary to performance, and flocks can include many standard pigeon color patterns.
Keeping Lugoj rollers is different from keeping purely ornamental pigeons. Young birds are usually settled carefully, trained in small groups, and flown when weather and predator pressure allow. Feed is managed so the birds are keen to fly but not weakened, and over-rolling or poor recovery should not be bred forward. A secure loft with a trapping routine helps protect the kit and lets the handler evaluate each bird after exercise. When buying, ask whether the line is still flown regularly; a roller name means little if the birds have been selected only for color or cage presence.
