Macedonian Owl
The Macedonian owl is a Balkan fancy pigeon from the owl pigeon group, associated with Macedonia and neighboring pigeon-keeping communities. Like other domestic pigeons, it traces to Columba livia, but its show identity comes from a short face, rounded head, compact carriage, and a breast frill. Regional names and standards may vary, especially where birds have been maintained by local clubs rather than large international registries. It belongs in the same broad conversation as other European and eastern Mediterranean owl or turbit-like pigeons, while retaining its own local type.
Macedonian owls are kept mainly by specialist fanciers who value head shape, frill, stance, and steady temperament. The shorter beak calls for sensible breeding management: pairs should be watched at hatching, and some lofts use feeder parents if a line struggles to rear. Housing needs are not unusual for pigeons, but dry, uncrowded quarters help preserve the feathering and reduce respiratory trouble. Anyone acquiring the breed should ask which standard the birds are bred to and avoid stock selected so heavily for face length that feeding, fertility, or vigor suffers.
