Marchenero Pouter
From Marchena in Andalusia, the Marchenero pouter, or buchón Marchenero, belongs to Spain's older cropper-pouter tradition. These pigeons carry an inflated crop, a proud front, and a lively courting manner around the loft. Unlike the heaviest show pouters, the Marchenero is usually valued as a working flying pouter, able to move well and display in the air as well as on the perch.
Keeping Marcheneros calls for attention to both type and behavior. A loft should allow free exercise, secure trapping, and separate breeding spaces because mature cocks can be forceful during courtship. Breeders look for a crop that is expressive but not so exaggerated that feeding, breathing, or rearing is compromised. In Spain and among specialist fanciers elsewhere, local standards and family lines matter, so new buyers should learn the preferred carriage and flight style before choosing birds.
