Mariola
Associated with eastern Spain and the Sierra de Mariola area between Alicante and Valencia, the Mariola is usually treated in the pigeon fancy as a regional pouter or cropper-type domestic pigeon. It belongs to the broad Spanish buchón tradition rather than to the racing or highflyer groups. Fanciers look for an animated bird with an expressive crop, balanced body, and enough wing and tail control to show itself well around the loft.
Mariolas are kept by specialists who appreciate Spanish pouter behavior as much as color. Housing should allow exercise and safe separation of pairs, since cocks may be territorial when displaying. As with other cropper pigeons, the best breeding birds combine style with practical health: they can eat normally, breathe freely, and rear their young. Because the name is not common in every registry, prospective buyers should check the local standard and the line's connection to established Mariola stock.
