Međimurje Swallow Pigeon
The Međimurje swallow pigeon is a Croatian domestic pigeon breed from Međimurje, the northern region between the Mura and Drava rivers. Its name points to the swallow color pattern, a classic fancy-pigeon arrangement in which colored areas on the wings and head contrast with a largely white body. It is descended from Columba livia like other domestic pigeons, but it carries a regional identity shaped by local fanciers and show standards. Clean marking boundaries, balanced body shape, and correct feather condition are more important than heavy production traits.
In the loft, Međimurje swallow pigeons are kept mainly for exhibition, breed preservation, and the satisfaction of maintaining a local variety. White feathering shows dirt quickly, so dry floors, clean bathing water, and well-managed nest areas make a visible difference. Breeding pairs are selected not only for color but also for vigor and reliable parenting, since attractive markings are of little use in a weak line. When possible, compare birds to a Croatian or recognized club standard, especially if the breed name is translated differently.
