Modern Spanish Thief Pouter
The modern Spanish Thief pouter is a contemporary expression of the Spanish thief pouter tradition, in which pouters were bred for display, crop inflation, courtship drive, and the old practice of drawing other pigeons. Modern lines may be more standardized for exhibition, but the name still points to behavior as well as shape. The bird should show confidence, crop control, and a Spanish pouter outline.
These pigeons require experienced management because strong display behavior can become disruptive in cramped lofts. Breeders should provide space, watch male temperament, and select for health alongside the dramatic crop and carriage. Buyers need to know whether the birds are bred for show, traditional working behavior, or a blend, since each path can produce a different kind of pouter.
