Muffed Helmet
The muffed helmet pigeon is a fancy domestic pigeon descended from Columba livia and developed within the Helmet family of color-marked breeds. It is defined by a mostly white body, a colored cap or "helmet" on the head, a colored tail, and feathered feet. The muffs give the bird a fuller outline than clean-legged Helmet pigeons, while the body remains neat and balanced for exhibition. Lines may be seen in blue, black, ash red, brown, dilute, grizzle, checker, bar, and related pigeon colors.
It is kept mainly for show and small-loft breeding rather than homing or meat production. Clean, dry flooring matters because foot feathering quickly stains or breaks in damp lofts, and nest boxes should not snag the muffs. Breeders pair birds for crisp markings, even feathering, sound legs, and a calm show temperament, while still watching fertility and chick-rearing ability.
