Munsterland Field Pigeon
The Munsterland field pigeon, often written Münsterland field pigeon in European sources, is a German domestic pigeon from the Münsterland region of Westphalia. It belongs to the field pigeon tradition: hardy farm and village pigeons refined into a show breed while retaining a practical, active build. As a descendant of Columba livia, it appears in familiar pigeon colors and patterns, but its value lies in a balanced body, alert carriage, and the plain working character associated with old regional loft birds.
This breed suits fanciers who like robust pigeons with local history rather than heavy ornament. A dry loft, regular bath water, grit, and a balanced grain mix are usually enough for daily management, provided the birds have space to move and pair naturally. Breeding programs should avoid chasing color alone; size, vigor, fertility, and correct field-pigeon type are just as important, especially where breeding stock is scarce outside Germany.
