Oriental Frill
The Oriental frill is a fancy pigeon from the old frill and owl pigeon tradition of the eastern Mediterranean, especially Turkey and the former Ottoman fancy. It is recognized by a short face, rounded head, shell crest, breast frill, and patterned wing shields, with many birds also carrying ornamental foot feathering. Satinette and Blondinette forms are familiar to fanciers, and laced varieties such as black laced, blue laced, brown laced, red laced, sulphur laced, and yellow laced are part of the breed's show vocabulary.
These are exhibition pigeons rather than working flyers. The short beak and ornamental feathering mean breeding pairs may need close observation at hatch, and some modern lines use longer-billed foster pigeons when parents struggle to feed small squabs. A dry, clean loft helps preserve the frill and foot feathering, while calm handling prevents broken feathers before shows. Buyers should distinguish modern short-faced birds from Old Fashioned or Classic Oriental frills, which are usually less exaggerated and may be managed differently.
