Ostrava Bagdad
The Ostrava Bagdad is a Czech wattle or carrier-type pigeon associated with Ostrava in the Moravian-Silesian region. In pigeon terminology, Bagdad refers to a family of strong-headed fancy pigeons rather than a modern messenger breed. Typical birds are expected to show a firm body, alert stance, elongated head, strong beak, and developed nasal and eye ceres without looking coarse. Color is secondary to the head, balance, and breed character in exhibition judging.
Ostrava Bagdads are usually kept by specialty show breeders in lofts that protect the face and beak from abrasion. Feeders and drinkers should be easy to clean, since heavy cere and eye skin can collect dirt if birds are crowded or poorly housed. Breeding decisions should favor sound breathing, clear eyes, and moderate wattles as well as show outline. The breed may be a poor fit for keepers wanting a free-flying pigeon, but it suits fanciers interested in Central European wattle-pigeon type and careful selection.
