Polish Highflyer
The Polish Highflyer is a performance pigeon developed in Poland for high, sustained flight, often flown in kits from a home loft. It is descended from the domestic rock pigeon but differs from many Polish exhibition breeds because its value is tied to orientation, stamina, and willingness to climb. Birds are usually light, tight feathered, and athletic, with enough variation in color and markings that appearance alone is not a reliable measure of quality.
Keeping Polish Highflyers is closer to managing athletes than maintaining purely ornamental pigeons. Young birds need a careful settling period, regular release routines, and feed adjusted so they are eager to fly but not depleted. Weather, hawks, and local rules all affect when a kit can safely be let out. Breeding from proven flyers, not just attractive birds, helps preserve the trait that gives the breed its name. New buyers should ask whether the family is actively flown and what duration or height the breeder expects.
