Rollers
Rollers are domestic pigeons bred for an aerial roll, in which the bird turns backward rapidly during flight. The best-known examples include Birmingham rollers, but roller families vary widely, from kit-flying birds selected for controlled depth and frequency to types kept more for exhibition or local tradition. The key distinction is that rolling is an inherited performance trait, not a random loss of balance.
Managing rollers requires more than ordinary fancy-pigeon care. Fanciers condition birds in kits, watch the age at which rolling begins, and avoid selecting birds that roll so deeply or unpredictably that they become unsafe. Feed, exercise, weather, and release timing can all affect performance. Responsible breeders value control, recovery, and sound health alongside style, because a dramatic roll is not useful if the bird cannot fly safely back to the loft.
