Runt
The runt is one of the largest domestic pigeon breeds, a heavy utility type descended from old European and Mediterranean meat pigeons rather than from racing or aerial performance lines. Runts have broad bodies, substantial bone, deep chests, and a calmer, weightier presence than most fancy pigeons. Their history is tied to squab production and table pigeon breeding, although many modern birds are kept for exhibition, conservation of old utility bloodlines, or the pleasure of maintaining a giant pigeon.
Management has to respect their size. Runts need roomy nest boxes, sturdy perches set low enough to reduce injuries, and floors that stay dry under heavier traffic. Breeding pairs can be productive, but eggs, chicks, and parent birds are best monitored because large pigeons can be clumsy in cramped quarters. Buyers should look for strong legs, clean breathing, good feather condition, and parents that rear young reliably, not simply the biggest bird in the pen.
