Sarajewo Roller
The Sarajewo roller, often connected with Sarajevo in Balkan pigeon culture, is a roller-type domestic pigeon selected for aerial performance rather than simple color display. Roller pigeons are valued for controlled backward rolls or spinning action in flight, and regional strains may differ in depth, frequency, height, and steadiness. The Sarajewo name points to a local tradition, so it should be distinguished from generic tumblers and from highflyers that are judged mainly by altitude or endurance.
Keeping rollers calls for disciplined training and restraint. Young birds need time to learn the loft before being asked to perform, and breeders should avoid selecting birds that roll so hard they become unsafe. Sound bodies, orientation, and a kit that responds well together are as important as style. Housing can be simple, but the management is not casual: feeding, release timing, weather, and predator pressure all affect whether a roller line shows its best qualities.
