Saxon Shield

The Saxon shield is a German color pigeon identified by shield markings on the wings. In pigeon terminology, the shield is the broad wing area visible when the bird is at rest, and the Saxon version belongs to a wider family of regional German marked pigeons. The breed is ornamental and exhibition-oriented, with fanciers looking for even color, clean borders, correct body type, and a presentation that separates it from saddle, wing, and swallow patterns.

Good Saxon shield breeding is detail work. The loft must keep feathers clean, especially along the wing edges where pattern faults are obvious. Pairings should be selected from birds that reproduce both the shield marking and the underlying type. Youngsters with mismarked wings may still be healthy pigeons, but they are less useful for preserving the variety. Buyers should compare several related birds so they can see whether the shield pattern is stable in the family.
