South German Moorhead
The South German Moorhead is a German regional color pigeon defined by a dark or colored head contrasting with a lighter body. Moorhead varieties are about pattern discipline: the head color, boundary line, body tone, and general type must work together. This places the breed among ornamental color pigeons, separate from the flight emphasis of highflyers and the inflated crop display of pouters.
Good Moorhead breeding requires a patient eye after the molt. Young birds may change enough that early promise is not always reliable, and a strong head color can still be spoiled by poor boundary placement or weak body condition. Keepers should provide clean loft surfaces and regular bathing opportunities because contrast markings expose dirt and feather wear. Buyers should compare both sides of the head and check that the bird is sound in hand; a bold pattern is only useful when carried by a healthy breeder.
