Spanish Bagdad
The Spanish Bagdad is a fancy pigeon tied to the Bagdad or Bagadette family of long-headed carrier-type pigeons. Spanish lines may be described differently from German, French, or Middle Eastern relatives, so the name should be read as a regional exhibition type rather than a single worldwide standard. The bird is generally valued for head and beak character, carriage, eye expression, and the dry, athletic outline associated with old messenger and carrier pigeons.
In the loft, Spanish Bagdads are bred for type rather than speed. Fanciers watch the balance between a strong head and a body that remains fertile, active, and able to rear young. The facial features that make the breed attractive can require sensible selection, since excessive beak or cere development may complicate feeding or pairing. Birds should be handled calmly and housed where the head and eye ceres stay clean. Buyers benefit from seeing adult relatives, because young Bagdad-type pigeons can change markedly as they mature.
